The papers consist files containing of correspondence, field notes, and articles written by Mary Jean Kennedy. Kennedy's academic career at the University of California, Berkeley is represented by a paper on the economic structure of the San Carlos Apache, written for a class taught by Edward Winslow Gifford in 1955, and her unpublished doctoral dissertation entitled, "Culture Contact and Acculturation of the Southwestern Pomo."

Mary Jean Kennedy Aerni (1918-1998) was awarded her A.B. degree from Stanford University in 1939 and her Ph. D. in Anthropology at U.C. Berkeley in 1955. She did her early fieldwork among the San Carlos Apache, the Karok, the Yokuts, and the Kashaya Pomo. In the mid-1950s, she was one of the first American anthropologists to work in Pakistan, and in the 1960s she worked among the Karamajong, a tribe in Uganda.
